"Shocking" safety failings revealed by investigation into collapsed buildings

Ethos Construction Solutions Limited along with Director Pritish Lad were prosecuted on 1 August after a HSE investigation revealed a catalogue of serious issues.

Ethos Construction was the principle contractor for refurbishment work on a self-contained block of 14 buildings on Fulham Road. The buildings had been empty for 2 years, however on the 23rd January, during extensive works, two adjoining properties collapsed. Fortunately being a weekend the site was empty and therefore nobody was injured.

A Prohibition Notice was issued by the HSE until a competent structural engineer could identify all necessary works.

Following an investigation HSE inspectors identified several issues and issued 2 more Prohibition Notices.

Overwhelming evidence was presented by the HSE and both the Company and the Director were found guilty of dangerous working practices, poor planning and poor management. This constitued to breaching 27(2), 28(1), 31, 38(a), 40 and 41(1)(a) of the CDM Regs 2007 and one breach of regulation 6(3) of the Work at Height Regs 2005.
